THE ART OF MAKING WOOD SING

Atelier de lutherie Jules Saint-Michel, located right in the heart of Montreal’s Quartier des spectacles (entertainment district), has been in business since 1970. It has seen three generations of the Saint-Michel family ply their trade. They make violins, violas, cellos and double basses and repair and restore period and modern stringed instruments. They also import violins, guitars, mandolins and harps and offer expertise and appraisals for insurance purposes. Come admire the musical instrument collection, stop and take a closer look at Quebec-made antique violins, get acquainted with great luthiers of the past and learn about the origin and history of stringed instrument making. See how a violin is built, what woods are used, which parts compose the violin and what accessories are added before a violinist can play the instrument. Watch the artisan repair or craft a violin—an instrument whose shape hasn’t changed in the last 450 years!
