Through fee-based guided visits and boutique sales, artisans are able to generate additional business revenue and circulate their products outside of their region. WHO CAN BECOME A MEMBER?
The ENS is an artisans’ network, i.e. individuals practicing a craft or using traditional techniques or techniques inspired from tradition, whose work consists in consists in using their know-how and talents to manufacture unique items as a means to earning an income. At the heart of the ÉCONOMUSÉE® lies the artisan at work, in other words “a heritage earning a living.”
The network seeks to attract creative artisans practicing a craft associated with intangible know-how. They are actors of a community’s cultural heritage, whose identity they help to define through their know-how:
- Know, an intangible witness who is part of a local culture, tradition, and transmission
- How, a tangible witness of a type of economic activity characterized by its artisanal nature and raw material processing in order to attribute added value to it.
An artisan can be defined as a person who, with a view to earning an income,
- Practices a professional activity
- Is self-employed
- Manufactures utilitarian items in limited numbers
- Ensures most stages of the manufacturing process
- Usually has a workshop
Artisans create artisanal items
- By hand and using machines
- Using a limited number of tools
- Inspired from tradition while integrating new technologies
ARTISAN SELECTION CRITERIA
- Having a privately owned, for-profit business, a workers’ cooperative or a non-profit organization that has been active for at least three years
- Using a traditional technique or know-how, or inspired from tradition, to create products
- Creating items whose quality is recognized
- Having the ability and desire to be innovative in the production process
- Maintaining production year-round and opening the business’s doors to the public, or agreeing to do so, for at least four (4) months per year
- Having a turnover of over seventy-five thousand dollars ($75,000) per year (Québec) and being able to demonstrate the business’s financial viability
- Showing a marked interest for welcoming visitors
- Being in a location with a potential for attracting visitors
- Working in a building with the required space for hosting an ÉCONOMUSÉE and welcoming visitors (15 to 20 people at a time) or planning to acquire such spaces
- Working in a location and buildings of quality
To these are added considerations such as enjoying peer recognition, support from the tourist, economic, or political spheres, and above all, being dedicated to passing on know-how.
